Dans le genre blockbusters, la licence Far Cry est assez connue dans le monde du jeux vidéo. Forte de ses bases acquises lors des premiers opus, la sortie du troisième épisode a propulsé la licence en tête des ventes pendant une bonne période, ne cessant de s’attirer les éloges des critiques et des joueurs. Un monde ouvert et un scénario intéressant ont suffit à me tourner vers cette licence et voir ce qu’un épisode de cette série avait dans le ventre.
J’ai tout d’abord voulu me procurer le premier épisode sur xBox première du nom, puis j’ai ensuite raisonné en me disant que j’allais peut-être mal voir le jeu sur des graphismes vieillissants. Puis, une bonne affaire sur le deuxième opus m’a fait sortir la carte bleue et investir dans Far Cry 2. Vous vous posez sûrement la question « Mais devant le succès du 3, pourquoi ne l’a t-il pas acheté ? ». Bah c’est simple, je n’avais pas les moyens de me le procurer plein pot, et même actuellement, je n’ai toujours pas les moyens d’acheter les jeux à leur prix de sortie.
Dès le début, on est happé par la narration qui pose les bases d’un scénario qui promet de l’action et des interactions tout au long de cette quête. C’est donc dans la peau de ce faux touriste que nous parcourons la jungle dans la jeep d’un habitant de l’île. Cette même île en proie aux terribles trafic d’armes et de diamants et de la guerilla bien décidée à renverser le gouvernement et à contrôler la région (Des scènes de départ qui font étrangement penser au film « Blood Diamond »). Bref, c’est dans ce contexte hostile que nous sommes plongés au cœur de cet univers qui promet de longues heures de jeu palpitantes, si seulement…
Parce que oui, c’est dès les premières secondes passées à jouer du joystick que je me suis rendu compte qu’il y aurait quelque chose qui allait totalement freiner mon envie d’en découvrir plus… Sa maniabilité. Étant un grand habitué des FPS CoD et Battlefield, j’ai l’habitude de cette fluidité dans les mouvements, cette possibilité de faire plusieurs actions en même temps et de me sentir bien avec ma manette, or, on se retrouve avec un pad extrêmement rigide que même un détour par un réglage de la sensibilité n’estompe pas. Les visées en diagonale relève du calvaire et la frustration que ce problème engendre dans les gun-fights a de quoi faire péter un câble assez rapidement. Ici, pas question de faire le grand malade et de dézinguer à tout va, de toute manière c’est impossible à cause de la rigidité de la visée. Le seul moyen pour s’en sortir est d’adopter un mode de jeu lent.
Une des missions de départ propose au joueur d’aller récupérer un otage dans un petit camp de miliciens, bien, c’est donc à bord d’une petite voiture que nous approchons les lieux. Mais pas question de se faire remarquer, il est donc préférable de mettre pied à terre une fois arrivée à proximité du lieu de déroulement de la mission. Deux guerilleros armés sont postés sur le sentier qui mène au camp situé plus bas, une occasion parfaite pour tester une approche furtive. C’est donc accroupi dans les fougères que j’approche discrètement d’un des deux gardiens, arme de poing sortie, une balle dans la tête a raison de la vie de cet individu, mais évidemment, le coup de feu n’a pas échappé au second milicien qui se rue sur son collègue arme à l’épaule pour tenter de me débusquer. Seconde balle tirée, second cadavre à mes pieds. Je me relève avec l’idée dans la tête que les deux coups tirés précédemment auront alerté le camp de miliciens, mais aucune voix ne parvient à mon oreille, je continue donc à avancer doucement dans les hautes herbes pour m’approcher de mon objectif. J’aperçois le camp au loin, trois hommes armés et un petit promontoire sur ma gauche qui me permettra à tous les coups d’avoir une meilleure vue sur le reste du campement. Je traverse le sentier en courant, priant qu’aucun des miliciens ne m’ait repéré du coin de l’oeil… Aucun bruit, je peux continuer.
De plus en plus haut, j’arrive au bout du pic et me situe désormais à une quinzaine de mètres au dessus du campement et découvre l’étendue de la tâche qui m’attend. Une quinzaines de paires de bras armés est assise la à attendre que le temps passe. J’évalue la situation et commence à faire pleuvoir le déluge de balles. Caché derrière un obstacle robuste, je sors la tête et presse la gâchette et mine de rien, les bonhommes d’en bas sont plutôt costauds et il faut bien un demi-chargeur pour venir à bout de la vie d’un seul homme. Et c’est la que la maniabilité montre sa médiocrité ; Il est extrêmement compliqué d’ajuster un homme, de le descendre et d’ajuster un autre homme derrière rapidement. Viser quelqu’un prend énormément de temps, temps que les ennemis consacrent eux à nous tirer dessus, et ils visent bien les bougres. Ne comptez même pas tirer des rafales de balles, ici c’est coup par coup obligatoire si l’on veut que les balles se dirigent un minimum sur la cible. Au bout de quelques minutes de fusillades qui m’auront paru une éternité, je daigne sortir de ma cachette et m’empresse de descendre m’occuper de l’otage, libéré de ses ravisseurs.
Pourtant, quand y regarde de plus près, d’un point de vue narratif, cette mission est vraiment un moment excitant à vivre, mais la maniabilité et la visée rend l’acte affreux à réaliser et détériore complètement l’expérience de jeu.
Néanmoins, avant de commander ce jeu, j’avais quand même pris le temps de lire quelques critiques, toutes positives et élogieuses… Alors quoi ? Pourquoi je n’accroche pas ? Ce jeu avait tout pour me plaire mais je l’ai lâché et je ne suis pas prêt pour retourner dessus. J’espère donc recueillir d’autres témoignages de joueurs possédant ce jeu et connaître leur point de vue sur la jouabilité de ce titre et si je suis vraiment le seul qui a été complètement rebuté par cette expérience. Peut-être ne suis-je pas patient, peut-être que pour certains, les autres FPS devraient prendre exemple sur ce jeu et sa maniabilité, peut-être je suis juste un mauvais joueur 😛 ? Mais j’ai quand même été déçu, surtout que comme je l’ai dis, je pensais vraiment qu’il ferait parti de mes préférés avant même de le lancer.

EDIT : Bon, j’ai eu l’occasion de discuter avec des fans de la licence et donc comparer un peu mes impressions avec les leurs. Le constat est sans appel, d’après eux, Far Cry 2 est l’opus le plus minable que la licence ait été en mesure de mettre sur le marché et que Far Cry 3 n’avait absolument rien à voir avec le 2. Je suis donc rassuré sur l’avenir de cette licence et ait ajouté ce troisième épisode à ma wish-list. Je vous tiendrai au courant sur Twitter quant à son acquisition 🙂
