Un mois après son acquisition, il était temps que je vous livre mon avis sur ce Google Cardboard. Le Cardboard, c’est l’entrée de gamme de la Réalité Virtuelle. Pour cinq euros, il est depuis plusieurs mois possible de visualiser concrètement ce que réalité virtuelle signifie. Selon le smartphone que vous utiliserez avec, j’aime plutôt parler d’initiation à la VR plutôt que vraie VR. Pour ma part, j’ai testé le Cardboard de Google avec mon Moto G , un smartphone de milieu de gamme doté d’une résolution d’affichage équivalente à 1280*720 pixels et d’1Go de RAM.
Globalement, le Cardboard marche de la même manière que les autres casques de réalité virtuelle. L’écran est séparé en deux par une plaque (en carton dans le cadre de notre Cardboard) dédiant ainsi chaque œil à l’exclusive vision d’une partie de l’écran inséré dans l’appareil. En projetant deux images dont le point de vue est différent, l’œil renvoie au cerveau une image modifiée plus communément appelée image en trois dimensions !
Côté construction, comptez trente secondes… Une fois que vous avez compris comment ça se montait. Personnellement, j’ai bien pataugé quinze bonnes minutes entre vidéos YouTube et schémas en carton pour monter l’engin.
Une fois la construction aboutie, il faut penser software. Dans le cas de mon Moto G troisième génération, l’application officielle n’est supposément pas compatible avec mon appareil alors que j’avais vérifié avant l’achat de mon smartphone si je pouvais profiter de la VR. Pour se faire, j’ai du récupérer un .apk d’une version antérieure sur l’internet. La dernière version étant titrée 1.7, j’ai téléchargé la 1.6 et l’application s’est finalement installée et ouverte. En plus de suggérer à l’utilisateur plusieurs applications démonstratives permettant les premières exploitations de notre nouveau jouet, l’application permet de flasher notre “code cardboard” afin d’adapter les images produites par notre écran au lentilles et à la taille de notre modèle.
Concernant l’association du Moto G3 et du Google Cardboard, je préfère parler d’initiation à la VR plutôt que de vraie VR et ce pour plusieurs raisons. La gestion des mouvements de tête est presque inexistante avec ce téléphone ce qui imite dès le début es capacités immersives de cette technologie. Néanmoins et même si l’interaction entre utilisateur et images projetées est ultra limitée, on peut très bien profiter de l’impression de trois dimensions fournie.
Quelques défauts toujours relatifs au smartphone que j’utilise : La qualité d’image. Étant donné que l’écran est séparé en deux, on se retrouve avec une résolution d’écran divisée en deux. Je me trompe peut-être mais si je comprend bien, je me retrouve du coup avec une résolution d’image de 360p vu que chaque vidéo projetée dans chaque oeil se limite à la portion d’écran qui lui est assignée. En ce sens, je me met à me demander si le fait d’avoir un smartphone doté d’une résolution d’environ 2000p n’est pas nécessaire pour du coup profiter d’un meilleur confort de visionnage. En tout cas, dans le cas du Moto G3, l’image produite n’est vraiment pas agréable à suivre sur le long terme et casse beaucoup les capacités immersives de la technologie. Alors bien sûr, vu que je vous parle d’initiation à la VR depuis le début, je suis conscient de devoir supporter une liste plus ou moins longue de défauts mais celui-ci gâche pas mal. J’veux dire, à l’époque de la PS1, jouer à Tomb Raider faisait travailler l’imaginaire mais au jour d’aujourd’hui et face à cette course au photo-réalisme, retrouver une qualité d’image équivalente des jeux d’il y a trois générations de consoles, ça fait bobo aux mirettes.
En dehors de ça, mes impressions sont toujours autant mitigées. Je dois faire parti de ces mauvaises personnes qui ne sont pas réceptives à la réalité virtuelle.. Ca me file une migraine monstre. J’ai testé plusieurs applications, du parcours en montagne russe à la visite d’un musée en passant par la contemplation de paysages, je ne sais pas si c’est le fait d’avoir un écran lumineux à 3cm de mes yeux ou la technologie en elle-même mais j’en suis toujours ressorti très mal. Contrairement au bateau qui pour certains provoque des vomissements pendant le trajet, mon expérience avec le Cardboard se passe super bien jusqu’au moment où j’enlève le casque de ma tête. Le retour à la “réalité” me fait super mal au crâne au point d’avoir besoin de m’allonger pendant un certain temps afin de laisser ce désagréable sentiment se faire la malle.
En bref, pour les cinq euros frais de port inclus que ce Cardboard m’a coûté sur ce site et en dehors de l’énorme délai de livraison causé par le pays d’origine du produit, je termine avec un avis vachement mitigé vis à vis de cette nouvelle technologie. Néanmoins, j’ai peur que mon avis soit biaisé à cause du smartphone utilisé et de la qualité générale de l’appareil. C’est pourquoi ici je ne vous livre pas un avis sur la VR en général mais bien sur l’association du Cardboard de Google avec le Motorola Moto G de troisième génération sorti cet été 2015.
En attendant, je n’ai pas fini de vous publier des articles orientés “high-tech”. J’ai une somme considérable de produits pour lesquels je souhaitais vous livrer un avis et ce Cardboard est le premier d’une liste qui compte au moins autant de produits que votre main compte de doigts si vous êtes normalement constitués.
