Aujourd’hui, j’aimerais vous présenter Race the Sun, un endless runner qui coûte pas cher du tout sur PC et disponible en plus sur tout l’écosystème Playstation depuis la PS Vita (Donc PS3/4) jusqu’à iOS et la Wii U.
Sorti en Août 2013 après avoir recueilli plus de 21k$ sur Kickstarter, le studio Flippfly qui avait à la base conçu son jeu à destination du marché mobile, face à la profusion du modèle free-to-play dans le secteur, a opté pour une sortie simultanée sur des supports plus classiques permettant ainsi de monétiser plus facilement leur produit.

En effet, il faudra jouer de la direction droite et gauche et du saut dans l’objectif d’avancer le plus loin possible ou de ramasser le plus de points sur la route, tout ceci en évitant les obstacles qui se dresseront au long du parcours et qui se feront de plus en plus nombreux au fur et à mesure de votre avancée. Si les premières régions paraissent simples une fois la demi-heure de jeu passée, les obstacles font preuve d’un degré de fourberie assez élevés une fois que l’on atteint les régions avancées. De plus, il faut compter avec le soleil qui a la fâcheuse tendance à descendre en dessous de la ligne d’horizon empêchant ainsi notre vaisseau propulsé à l’énergie solaire de poursuivre sa course. Pour résoudre ce soucis, un système de power-ups est disséminé tout au long du parcours généré aléatoirement. Une des variétés de ces collectibles permet donc de prolonger la journée et donc d’éviter à son vaisseau de tomber en panne.
Pour faciliter la progression et donner un sentiment de maîtrise progressive au joueur, un système de leveling a été instauré afin de débloquer des compétences facilitant la survie de notre petit vaisseau au coeur de ce monde bien hostile. Ainsi, en remplissant des objectifs bien précis comme n’user que de la flèche gauche pour se déplacer ou parcourir plusieurs régions d’affilée sans toucher d’objets, on gagnera des points pour gravir les 25 niveaux d’XP du jeu et ainsi débloquer des atouts. Au programme : la possibilité de stacker des power-ups permettant de sauter, des aimants permettant de récupérer les atouts en plein parcours en les frôlant simplement et bien d’autres trucs. Au fur et à mesure du jeu, on cumule les compétences rendant ainsi notre progression plus facile au sein des régions.
On serait tentés de penser avec tout ça que l’impression de progression est biaisée par ce système de leveling mais à mon avis, les compétences représentent 75% du bon déroulement d’un run, les 25% restants faisant la part belle à la qualité individuelle du joueur pour gérer ses power-ups, connaître son parcours, anticiper les dangers et se déplacer de la manière la plus fluide sans paniquer.
Autre élément de gameplay qui fait à mon sens la profondeur de ce jeu, la génération aléatoire des niveaux quotidiennement. En gros, chaque jour, un nouveau niveau est généré et proposé à la communauté. Celle-ci dispose donc de 24h pour taper le haut du classement et imposer son score. Ainsi, le jeu fait la part belle au scoring en réduisant le facteur chance de la génération d’un parcours aléatoire à chaque essai et n’avantage personne quand il s’agit de comparer son meilleur score à celui de ses amis. De plus et au moment de jouer, le score de vos amis qui ont le jeu apparaît sur votre écran quand vous le dépassez en pleine partie et ça, c’est assez sympa.
Dernier aspect : Les graphismes. J’aurais tendance à dire que pour ce genre de jeu, on aura surtout tendance à rechercher la performance tant notre survie peut se jouer à l’image par seconde près mais certains joueurs accordent plus d’importance à la beauté de l’environnement qu’à sa vraie utilité dans la manière dont cette qualité graphique sert ou dessert le gameplay. Bref, pour Race the sun de toute façon, même le preset “Fantastic” ne casse pas trois pattes à un canard. On est face à des blocs purs, durs et bien droits, sans rien d’autre. Les screenshots ont été pris depuis la version PC en 1920*1080p dans la qualité la plus basse disponible, mais au moins j’avais mes 60fps constants. Sinon le jeu est moche, même en “Fantastic”.
En somme, je conseillerai Race the Sun aux personnes qui veulent un jeu facile d’accès mais exigeant sur la longueur, qui aiment le scoring et qui ont une petite bourse. Proposé à 10€ sur Steam, il est possible que vous le retrouviez dans vos clefs Humble Bundle d’il y a quelques mois. Sinon, il vous reste toujours le marché gris où les clefs de Race the Sun se trouvent entre 80 centimes et 2 euros 50 suivant les revendeurs. A ce prix la, ce serait vraiment dommage de se priver d’un jeu proposant des parties courtes et autant de fonctionnalités intéressantes.
Je n’en ai pas parlé mais Race the sun, c’est aussi un éditeur de niveau complet et une communauté productive via le Steam Workshop. De plus, pour 1,99€, le DLC dont je vous ferais le test prochainement est disponible et propose un mode de jeu alternatif zen qui propose au joueur de parcourir un autre monde sans la pression inhérente au principe premier du jeu.
